Maintain a Project Roadmap

How do you know what projects are needed? How do you “chunk” a project so that it is doable within a reasonable timeframe? How do you ensure the project aligns with the big picture?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a list of “doable” projects that achieve the vision?

That is what the maintain a project roadmap system is all about…

My philosophy is the business must drive change as opposed to selecting a technology and hoping that the business will use it. I always start with the business vision, where does the business see itself in 2, 3 and even 10 years. The next thing I think about are the priorities because the priorities create an order of importance. Not until I understand the vision and the priorities can I start to work on a plan.

Creating a plan consists of looking at the current organization, which is everything that was documented in system 1. I use this information to understand what is needed to move the organization from the current state to the vision using the priorities from system 2 to create an order of importance. This is what I refer to as the “Business Roadmap” a list of business activities needed to move the organization forward.

Not only do I create a business plan I create a consolidated plan. The consolidated plan comes from taking into consideration the additional activities needed to “light up” each of those business items. The additional activities include things like applications, people and processes, infrastructure, security and information.

That is how I achieve my business-driven plan.

Using a fictitious organization I will demonstrate how to:

  • Analyze the business information we have been creating and turn it into a business plan or roadmap.
  • Bring together a team of subject-matter-experts to brainstorm what is needed to “light up” the business roadmap activities.
  • Create a detailed consolidated roadmap which will be used to drive projects.
